After he had been given this information, he realized he had helped a Dark Wizard to attain immortality. Later on, Slughorn retreats into his lonely house to save himself from further comments and regrets. However, Harry convinces him in the sixth book in the series, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, to return to Hogwarts and continue with the teaching profession.

At first, Harry does not know why Dumbledore had asked him to do so, but, he finds out that he had to retrieve an important memory of his conversation with Voldemort to get an idea of his knowledge about Horcruxes. At his sixth year at Hogwarts, Voldemort or Tom Riddle made his personal diary into a Horcrux. Before his downfall, he had entrusted this diary to Lucius Malfoy, his close associate and old school mate.

Malfoy was unaware of the importance of this diary, as Voldemort had not told him of it being a Horcrux. Therefore, he used it, to discredit Arthur Weasley by intentionally slipping the diary in Ginny’s cauldron in the second book of the series, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. Ginny Weasley becomes too addicted to writing in it about everything that she feels.pdf icon

With her every word, her life is slowly transferred into the diary, and it strengthens the soul- fragment living inside in the journal. The soul, slowly and steadily, possesses Ginny and uses her as a stooge to re-open they Chamber of Secrets to kill off all the Muggle students in Hogwarts. However, Harry Potter using the venomous fang of Basilisk destroys the diary. The soul-fragment was completely wiped-out, and life of Ginny was transferred back.

Even though being unaware of the fact that the diary had been a Horcrux, it was unintentionally destroyed by Harry to revive Ginny. The detail concerning Tom Riddle’s diary in the prequels and the new book reveals that it had been used as much as a weapon and a safeguard. It had been created to protect the soul of Voldemort, but it was also used to inflict terror on the Muggle students.
In the latter half of Half-Blood Prince, Harry comes to know about the diary in detail and that he had unconsciously destroyed one of the Horcruxes of Voldemort. The planning and sense of the sixth book by the author, J.K Rowling totally made the story unimaginable and thoroughly entertaining. It increased the worth and esteem of the legend in the heart of the die-hard Harry Potter fans.
